The Edmonton Indy car series is one of the rounds of indy car racing series, which takes place at the Edmonton City Centre Airport temporary circuit. Originally, when the race began in 2005, it was named the Rexall Grand Prix of Edmonton. The first race held in 2005 was named the Edmonton Mall Grand Prix; 2006 was sponsored by The Brick. In 2007 the Katz Group was the lead sponsor of the race, and in 2010 Honda Canada Inc. was the lead sponsor of the race.
The races began in 2005, and in 2006 was named as one of the 3 support series events of the Champ Car Atlantic Championship series. The series ran in 2007, 2008, and took a hiatus until 2010, and was just recently run in 2011 from July 22-24. Every year they attempt to include new courses to keep fan attendance high, and change up the venue for racers.
Past winners of the race include: Sebastien Bourdais (French), Justin Wilson (UK), for the Champ Car world series. For the Indy Car Series, winners include: Scott Dixon and Will Power, both from UK, and each taking two titles. And for the Atlantic Championship, winning drivers were: Katherine Legge (UK), Simon Pagenaud (French), Raphael Matos (Brasil), and Johnathan Bomarito and Jonathan Summerton (USA).
Attendance to the races has remained constant since the first race was held in 2005. In 2005, the 3-day total for races was 200,052. By 2008, the 3-day total for fans attending the race was down to 160,000 fans in attendance. Although attendance dropped during the years, it has had a constant fan base from around the world supporting drivers, not just individuals from Canda.
Although it has a short history, the Edmonton Indy Car Series hopes to constantly draw in new fans, and raise attendance to events.
